A Very American Saturday

Sunday, October 26, 2014

When my students asked what I was doing this weekend and I started listing the activities George and I had planned, I realized it sounded like the most American Saturday ever. I guess since we’re American and it was Saturday, it’s acceptable.

We started off yesterday with a trip to my school’s Homecoming football game (at 9am). This is the first year that we’ve ever had a team, so, needless to say, the kids are…still learning. I witnessed the first touchdown of the season, a touchdown on a kick off return. It was so exciting! Until we realized that we had too many players on the field. Oops!

Next stop was a park for early voting. Lesson learned, don’t try to use your cellphone in the voting booth to help you remember all 1000 judges you’re not supposed to vote for. Apparently, it’s not allowed.

The next stop of the American Saturday was a pumpkin patch so we could wander for 45 minutes through a corn maze, pick out pumpkins, and pet fluffy chickens and baby goats.

When we got home, we put up fall decorations and carved our perfect pumpkins. It was definitely a perfect American Saturday.

And, I learned a few pumpkin carving tricks that made my pumpkin look slightly less like a 7 year old carved it.

  • Step 1: Go to Target and buy a pumpkin carving kit. Seriously. You think you can use a kitchen knife, but you’re wrong. The tiny saw thing makes all the difference in the world.
  • Step 2: Print out the design you want to use.
  • Step 3: Wet your design and place it on your pumpkin.
  • Step 4: Cover the design with cling wrap.
  • Step 5: Carve out your design using the genius tiny saw thing.
  • Step 6: Admire your handiwork and wonder why you stubbornly never bought a pumpkin carving kit before.
