Wedding Wednesday: The Nitty-Gritty

Wednesday, March 3, 2016

A few weeks ago George told me we needed to make a “Wedding To Do List” – We’d been saying things like, “Oh, don’t let me forget to email the photographer,” or “Crap, we need to get so-and-so’s new address,” and it felt like a never-ending list.

So, George put together a list of a few things that were on his mind, shared the Google Doc with me at work, and within 5 minutes I’d added another 30 things. Now we just have a written never-ending list instead of a verbal never-ending list.

When the fun stuff is finished, like looking at venues and crafting the card box and creating the mood board, it gets down to the nitty-gritty. The endless emails (with lots of out-of-office replies) and the deposit deadlines and the budget spreadsheet.

Here are a few things that have kept us [relatively] sane this past month:

  1. The Wedding To-Do List: This gives George and I a common place to write down to-dos, a place to look on a random Tuesday night when we have an extra 20 minutes to check something off, and a place that makes me feel a little better knowing that there’s a light at the end of this wedding-planning tunnel.
  2. Shared Calendar: Our shared calendar is super helpful in normal life, but for wedding-planning life it’s become even more helpful. We put payment deadlines in the calendar with the vendor’s address and payment amount so we don’t forget to send in checks. We also have dates of all the showers and trips and a reminder to get our marriage license.
  3. Re-Reading our Ceremony: I just discovered this brilliant idea yesterday when I was looking through the ceremony outline. I looked at the reading that George’s sisters will read, and it reminded me of how excited I am to marry my favorite person on the planet. Our wedding is about so much more than escort cards and calligraphy.
  4. A no-wedding-talk vacation: In February, we went to Madison for an amazing weekend vacation. Even though Madison is our wedding location and we could have done a thousand things to get ready for the wedding, we just decided to have a quality-time weekend reconnecting and enjoying a city we love without worrying about checking things off the wedding list.

Got any other ideas for helping us get through the home stretch (three months! eeeek!)? Comment below!
